How to Dress For a Job Interview When You Are Over 40

It's tough enough to acquire a job, but significantly more after 40. While it's not fair, it's reality. So how can you create an image that communicates you are hip, current and still in the game?

Here are our top 5 tips:

1. Do Your Homework.

Things have changed. A navy blue suit and white blouse is not usually the greatest way to show up for a job unless you are going after a position in law, banking, or work at a big firm. Do a little research and find out what most people are wearing for the job you seek. Go on the company's website, call and ask about their dress code. Showing up in a suit, when the dress code is more informal in a business like graphic arts or p.r. will give the impression that you are rigid and clueless and won't fit in. Always bring a jacket just in case. You can always remove it.

2. Find a way to add a modest splash of color

Most individuals actually play it safe in an interview, but then everyone begins appearing the same. If you are wearing a blue suite, why not mix it with a fantastic flattering colored blouse. Color provides liveliness, especially to over 40 complexions which may be starting to fade because of aging skin. Stand out from the crowd in color and chances are you will not just get a compliment; you will get hired!

3. Don't show up wrinkled

Being wrinkly suggests that you are not a detail person. So be sure to get out the iron and show up looking nice and crisp. Avoid wearing textiles like linen or those that are "intended" to seem wrinkled. (Do you really need additional wrinkles after 40?) Also, make sure your shoes are in good shape and shined if they are leather!

4. Wear Updated Glasses

If your spectacles are looking out of date, your hair dull, then you can be giving the message, I'm not locked in old methods. Make sure your spectacles are in style and your hair neatly cropped. This can instantly make you look like the ideal person for the job!

5. Dress hip not young

This can be really tough. There's a narrow line between dressing trendy and too young. If you need some straightforward guidelines just remember: No low dresses, no cleavage, not too much makeup and forego the perfume. Keep jewelry to a minimal and don't wear anything that jangles or makes noise; it will be distracting. Look in the mirror; if you believe whatever you are considering of wearing could be too young appearing, it usually is!
